spread it evenly across the wall
The bathroom is the newest modification to the condo today. Yesterday, I posted pictures of progress from the prior days, where the bathroom only had waterproof concrete slabs. Today, the original piping was torn out and replaced with new copper and a new valve (yey). I’ve also got the tile in and some nice accent mosaic tiles that I rather like. It looks a bit dark, but hopefully when things are in it will contrast and be pretty etc etc.
Photo update for day 0, 1, 2, and 3
Today’s day 3 – not much has happened from yesterday. More gaps were filled in with subfloor, and more tiles were torn out. The shower boards are now put in, and next is to waterproof it and tile them. This work goes pretty fast, and its kind of interesting too!

There’s nothing there
To start out, I want to apologize for the lack of photos – I just never got around to loading them onto my computer so they’ll go up later.
So after Day One of this remodeling project, there really isn’t anything left in the unit. I walk in and see that there is bare concrete on the floors, the window sills are gone, all the cabinets and appliances are gone. It’s really quite an odd thing to see, especially when my current unit is identical except it has things in it now. The bathroom is also pretty empty; due to the plans though, more stuff has stayed (eg the tub, toilet, and washing machine). No walls in the shower, but tile and mirror are still there (tile is probably coming out). It’s kind of crazy.
I walked through the unit and it was amused because my shoes clicked on the floors (rubber soles, even!) and it echoed throughout the unit. It’s a really big difference from carpet. I figure that the echoing was also due to the fact that there was nothing there.
That’s the first day, which I skipped. Day Two has me walking in and seeing that parts of the floor are going in. The floors are going to be hardwood maple floors. It seems like they’ll look pretty nice. There’s currently (from what I can see) a layer of cork, some funky glue, and a layer of plywood. These parts make up the sub-floor (or at least, most of it). The hardwood is going to be laid on that, sanded, polished, and coated in what I’d imagine is some toxic substance that will provide some glossy, scratch-resistant sheen. The wood is actually sitting in the unit right now, and is either going to go in today or tomorrow. The intent is to let it sit a bit so that it can get acclimatized to the environment it’s going to be in (humidity, temperature, chemical makeup of the condo?) Non sequitur: I’m reading a book that talks about diving and making sure the nitrogen/gasses that are absorbed into your blood at depth have time to come out of your body. I that as an analogy for what the wood needs to do, except that it can’t get the bends. Oh well.
While construction has been going on in the unit, I’ve been doing my own work shopping for appliances and other required materials. Today, I’m meeting with the contractor to discuss the cabinetry some more so we can finalize what we are getting. Appliances are also going to come up, because I need to make sure they work with the cabinets (height/depth/number of holes-wise) We’ll see what we end up getting!
