A haiku a day keeps Byron sane. Sort of.

Day 18 : Last item purchased

Previously: Day 17 : An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)

I actually haven’t really purchased anything recently. I’ve been really quite frugal these days, since I’m realizing that my money supply is decreasing at an alarming rate. The fact that I am no longer working also hurts. The stuff I end up buying these days isn’t really that interesting.

I could tell you about my latest trip to Dominick’s (Safeway, for the California Kids), and what I bought (2 Gal 2% Milk, 18 eggs, Chicken Fillets, Sirloin Beef, Jalapeño Cheddar Focaccia, Goose Island Summertime) but that is also not very intriguing.

However, just because I personally haven’t bought interesting things does not mean that I will not be! One thing that people might find interesting is my living space for the upcoming year!

IMG_1728 I’ll be living in a studio at 474 N. Lakeshore Drive. It’s a 61 story building that is right off of Lakeshore and E. Illinois. This picture above is actually the only really good one i have showing the space. But! I’ve got two from a craigslist posting of a similar unit that show the rest of the unit.

It’s a pretty nice unit. However, from these pictures, you do not see the real gem of the apartment – the view!

The unit faces west, and the building to the west is 3-4 stories. Since units in this building start on the 16th floor (coincidentally, where the pictured deck is), there is a beautiful unobstructed view for a while to the west. North and Southwest views are of a park, and short buildings, so it’s actually really quite amazing.

It’s kind of crazy thinking that I’ll be living in a unit by myself – I’ve become accustomed to living with friends all around. I’m probably going to start moving the week before graduation. In order to reduce the possible loneliness, please visit me! For the NU kids, its only a 10 minute walk from the Intercampus stop!

Day 17 : An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)

Previously: Day 16 : A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

I don’t really know much about art, but I follow a blog called “Today and Tomorrow”, that finds a lot of really interesting pieces of art on the internet. Two series I liked are shown below.

Stukenborg

This guy uses a printing press to create his art. However, instead of using letter tiles like a normal press, he uses the faces of dice and makes various arrangements. I think someday I’d like to purchase one of these prints (or at least make them) because it is really quite simple, and they really do look good. It’s amazing how much you can do simply with 6 different patterns. Definitely check out his store on Etsy – there is a lot of cool stuff.

Nina Katchadourian

This woman uses books as her medium, using the titles printed on the spines to create witty/interesting/intriguing phrases. It’s funny how we always have stacks of books on tables or in our bookshelves, and we walk by the library shelves and never really notice how the titles and words may line up.

Art, although sometimes foreign, is sometimes quite intriguing

Day 16 : A song that makes you cry (or nearly)

Previously: Day 15 : A photo of people you don’t know

This is kind of a weird prompt. Songs don’t really make my cry, but they make me want to dance sometimes?

Well, today, I decided to write about a song that is pensive and such.

Sade – By Your Side

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It’s about how someone will always be there to help you up when you’ve fallen, to help lead you back onto the path if you’ve strayed. “Oh, when you’re cold, I’ll be there, by your side”.

Listen to it! Maybe if you’re feeling down this will make you not cry, but to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
