Day 06 : Favorite poem
Previously: Day 05 : Your favorite quote
This is probably the hardest one, since I don’t really read poetry. BUT, one that has stuck in my head since, 2nd grade? is “This is just to Say” by William Carlos Williams
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox-
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast-
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
I don’t know why I still remember anything about that poem – I guess its irony affected me as a child, and its just my style.
Of course, where would I be if I didn’t give a nod to my namesake (well, the guy with the same name as me, at least)
“She Walks in Beauty” – Lord George Gordon Byron
SHE walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that ‘s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair’d the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.-
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
